Värmland | Wilderness Holiday in Sweden

Värmland is for nature lovers, anglers and water enthusiasts of all kinds, both those who love to swim and splash and those who love to move through the water in a canoe, kayak or drifting on a raft. In winter, many also visit Värmland to enjoy both the alpine slopes and the cross-country trails.
Finally, Värmland is also a natural therapy, for all who need a break from our media bombarding bustling electronic everyday life. Here you can hear yourself think, while the sun takes its evening bath in Vänern - one of Värmlands more than 10,000 lakes. Can you hear the silence?

Whether you are a large family, a group of anglers or a company wanting team-building or a survival trip, Värmland will not disappoint you.

Värmland is also called "Sweden's southernmost wilderness", and here you can still encounter animals such as beavers, bears, moose, lynx and wolves. There are quiet a lot of tours and safaris, built around some of the animals you may encounter in the wilderness, and you can often choose whether it should be a one-day trip or longer, which allows you to plan a great tailor-made holiday.

Safari in Värmland

Beaver Safari
First a meal is made over an open fire, while we hear about the beaver. When twilight sets in we glide silently through Klarälvens waters to spot beavers.
Evening walk organized by Vildmark i Värmland.

Moose Safari
The tours take place at dusk and at dawn; which are the best times to spot wildlife. Here you can be lucky to see moose, deer, foxes, owls, hares and you even have a chance to see wolves and bears, although they are rare.

How to get to Värmland

It's always great to bring the car on holiday, then you just throw the suitcase in the boot - and no more waiting in endless queues to check in your luggage.

There are several ferry routes between Denmark and Sweden, which allows you to take your car to the wilderness, and furthermore the Oresund bridge in Denmark makes it possible to drive all the way.

You can also fly to Stockholm and continue to Karlstad by local flight or by rental car.

How far is it to Varmland?

Depending on which ferry route you take to Sweden, the distances and driving times are these:

Gothenburg to Karlstad: 247 km
The driving time is estimated to be 3 hrs 5 min.

Varberg to Karlstad: 320 km
The driving time is estimated to be 3 h 52 min.

Helsingborg to Karlstad: 459 km
The driving time is estimated to be 5 hours 5 min.

Stockholm to Karlstad: 311 km.
The driving time is estimated to be 3 hours 24 min.

Ystad to Karlstad: 568 km
The driving time is estimated to be 6 hours 9 min.
